Motorola Edge 30 Ultra Review

 Motorola Edge 30 Ultra Review

Motorola has entered the race for flagship smartphones with its latest launch of Moto Edge 30 Ultra. Motorola has been around quite a long time and in the past, we have seen various innovations from the company like the casting of the screen through projectors which used to come as accessories with its high-end phones. Today, we are going to give you insight into the new Moto Edge 30 Ultra which comes with the latest 8+ Gen1 processor, 125W fast charger, 144Hz refresh rate, and for the first time a 200MP camera lens.

Design

The first impression that one gets when they take out the phone is that it looks very similar to the Samsung phones as you can see the resemblance with the S22 series. The phone comes with a glass sandwich body divided by a metallic rim. The phone feels very premium and light in the hand and the good thing about it is that it is not slippery at all nor it attracts smudges when held despite having a glass body. The edge in the name of the phone is visible in the design as well as the phone comes with very sleek borders on the sides.

The new Moto Edge 30 Ultra holds a distinctive frame at its back side giving it a different look. The rear side holds an island frame that holds three camera sensors along with an LED flash.

The phone's power button and volume rockers are located on the right side, while the left side is left empty. The main speaker, Type-C connector, and SIM tray are located on the bottom side of the device.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5 has been used to protect the new Moto edge 30 ultras. Also, the phone comes with an IP52 certification which is dissatisfying to see in a flagship phone because even mid-range phones come with IP52 certification.

Display

The new Moto Edge 30 Ultra comes with a 6.67-inch OLED screen, 309ppi density and a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a screen resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. The bezels on the screen are very thin, almost merging with the frame. The display has a refresh rate of 144Hz which is the highest in android phones in the flagship segment. The benefit of having such a high refresh rate is that the games run very smoothly and the touch response acts very smoothly. The display comes with a peak brightness of 1250 nits and allows you to see any content on the screen very clearly and without difficulty, even in direct sunlight. The presence of HDR10+ support takes your viewing experience to the next level as the colors produced on the screen are very vivid, and punchy.

OS

The new Moto Edge 30 Ultra offers a clean user interface as it comes with Android 12. The phone comes with new smart features like the use of gestures to launch the camera and turn on the flashlight. The company has also kept the "Ready for" smart feature in the Moto Edge 30 Ultra which allows the phone to be connected to a TV or monitor so you can view your content or even can play the game on the larger display.

Performance

The fastest and most recent Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 (4nm) processor is featured in the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. We have used this in the past, and just as then, the processor provides a fluid experience when carrying out any activity. The company has an Adreno 730 GPU for the graphics. The 144Hz refresh rate makes the gaming experience more enjoyable, and the games played quite smoothly at their top settings. The variant that we got to review has 128GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM.

Cameras

The standout feature of the new Moto edge 30 ultra is the presence of a 200MP Samsung HP1 main primary rear lens with an aperture of f/1.9, PDAF, and OIS. The second lens is a 12MP telephoto lens with an aperture of f/1.6 with 2x optical zoom. The third rear sensor is a 50MP ultra-wide lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and 114 degrees POV. For selfies, the company has placed a 60MP lens using an OmniVision OV60A sensor which has an aperture of f/2.2. The main rear camera lens captures images in 12.5MP by default. The images taken in daylight were brilliant with sharp details with perfect color balance. There is an option to capture images in 200MP as well but we think it is just a marketing trick because we did not find any practical use for it plus the images captured in such high resolution take up lots of space as well.

The new Motorola Edge 30 Ultra comes with Auto night vision, which processes and enhances the photographs to produce detailed and crisp low-light images, for taking pictures at night or in low light. To take more steady and clearly defined pictures at night, we'll advise using the Night mode. We did not experience any noise or graining effects while taking photographs, demonstrating how well the rear lenses produce images. The selfie camera allows you to capture images in three resolutions 60MP, 15MP, and 8MP. We'll advise using the 15MP camera because it can take more detailed selfies with excellent precision and brilliant colors.

Battery

The new Moto Edge 30 Ultra comes with a battery of 4,610 mAh and during our review period, it lasted a day quite comfortably with normal usage like playing movies and indulging in games. The charging speed is quite fast as the 125W charger fires up the battery power from 0-100% within almost 30-35 minutes. We faced the issue of heating while charging the phone which we disliked as the other flagship phone we used within the same range maintained the heat quite smartly.

Conclusion

The new Motorola Edge 30 Ultra offers some exciting features like a 144Hz refresh rate, and a 200MP lens but the overheating of the phone is a letdown. It surely presents itself strongly in the flagship segment but misses the mark to emerge at the top.
