OnePlus Buds Z2 Review

OnePlus Buds Z2

Introduction

The venture of OnePlus into sound technology has been fruitful for the company and it has surely made the competition tough for other existing companies. OnePlus has successfully brought down the heat of flagship headphones/earbuds with its products and with the same aim the company has now launched the evolved version of OnePlus Buds Z called as OnePlus Buds Z2. In this review of ours, we are going to highlight all improvements we are going to find in the new OnePlus Buds Z2.

Design

The new OnePlus Buds Z2 shares similarities with the OnePlus Bullets earbuds and OnePlus Buds Z2 in terms of design. They have gel tips, a circular touch-sensitive surface for gestures, and a short stem design. The earbud case is lightweight and pocket-friendly, with a pairing button and a Type-C charging port. OnePlus phone users will have automatic pairing. The earbuds offer simple controls like single tap for Play/Pause, double tap for next track, and triple tap for previous track. Holding down enables ANC and Transparency Mode, and switching between paired devices. However, volume control gestures are not available, which could be a useful addition in future models. The earbuds have an IP55 rating for dust and water resistance, making them suitable for gym use and light rain. It's important to note that water damage may not be covered under warranty.

Software and Features

As far as compatibility is concerned the new Buds Z2 is compatible with both iOS and Android through the Hey Melody app which you can download from the Google store and as already mentioned if you are using the OnePlus phone the option to pair pops up automatically. If you are not a OnePlus phone user then the Hey Melody app will let you perform firmware updates, change the touch controls, perform an earbud fit test, and toggle through the noise cancellation/sound transparency settings.

Sound and Modes

The earbuds sound great especially for the price segment in which they belong with a strong bass to make you groove to the song beats. The sound frequency is good and not so disturbing but at the high volume level, you might find it a little uneasy plus there is no inbuilt EQ to deliver the rhythmic sound and clarity which you seek. To sum up the sound experience we can say that the sound quality is normally not that very impressive.

The new Buds Z2 comes with transparency mode which we have seen in the previous earbuds from the company where removing an earbud from one ear will automatically switch the other earbud to transparency mode.

The earbuds are fitted with a Noise cancellation feature as well and the feature does a very good job of canceling the noise of the surrounding. The lag of the sound cancellation feature is that it does not block all sounds as you will always notice that some sounds manage to get through the cancellation feature.

Battery

The new OnePlus Buds Z2 comes with 38-hours of total listening time with ANC turned off. The Buds can last up to 7 hours on a single charge or up to 5 hours with ANC enabled. Each bud carries a 40mAh battery while the charging case packs a 520 mAh pack. The Buds support OnePlus “Flash Charging” which claims to deliver 5 hours of listening time with just 10-minutes of charging.

Conclusion

The new OnePlus Buds Z2 can be considered an ok to invest in earbuds as with great looks and light case the buds manage to deliver great sound quality. The company could have added features is EQ and a high level of sound cancellation which could have made the buds unmatchable in the competition. The OnePlus Buds Z2 is a better choice as compared to its competitor Google Pixel Buds A-Series.
